This film really does capture the creativity and whimsy of the books in what is I’m sad to say is one of the weaker films. Not that it’s bad, but it’s… fine. And that’s it’s the biggest flaw, in that the film is just “okay.” I’m not a very big Harry Potter fan, but this did make me enjoy the world it’s created more.

The story is very inventive and interesting, and even with the dated effects, it’s still pretty impressive to watch. Ron Weasley and Hermione Granger are two of my favorite supporting characters in all cinema, and the film gives them a great introduction. Hagrid is lovable and well-meaning, and all of the teachers are all pretty good, excluding one who I will talk about soon.

What don’t I like about it? Well, Harry is pretty bland. I know it’s just the first film, but he never develops. I feel like if this focused on Ron or Hermione the films and the books would be so much better. But no, we got the easily excited wide-eyed innocent who means well but has tweenage/teenage angst instead. I also only see Dumbledore as a Gandalf ripoff. I respect that the fans see more in him, but I see nothing but a Gandalf ripoff. Overall, it’s okay, a decent start to the Harry Potter films, and one that is definitely worth watching a few times over.
